The ocean is vast and hard to control, so dreamers often meet it at moments of big feelings or big unknowns. A calm sea and a towering wave are opposite experiences.

Continuity researchers read settings through the emotions attached to them. A huge wave or tsunami is a common image when something feels about to overwhelm you: news, a deadline, a family situation. Looking at a calm sea is often described as peaceful or longing. The depth of the ocean also makes it a natural image for what you do not know yet, about a situation or about yourself.

Artemidorus read the sea by its condition: a calm, clear sea favoured the dreamer and a stormy one signalled troubles, with sailors, merchants and others read differently according to their trade.
- Artemidorus 1644
American popular dream books, around 1900
Dream books around 1900 read a calm ocean as a favourable sign and a rough ocean as struggle. This is folklore, not prediction.
- Miller 1901
- Was the ocean calm, stormy, rising toward you?
- What feels vast or beyond your control right now?
- What would it mean to trust the water, or to step back from it?
