Dream researchers who follow the continuity idea find that dreams tend to pick up the relationships and worries that still carry emotional weight for us, not the ones we think about most calmly. An ex can appear because something current echoes that relationship: a new partner, a similar argument, a date on the calendar, or simply a song. The NEXTUP model suggests the sleeping brain likes to link loosely related memories, so an old relationship can become the stage for a new feeling. It helps to notice who the ex was in the dream (kind, cold, leaving, returning) and how you felt on waking, rather than what they did.
